Careful or I'll steal your... cheese?

This was funny. Worth checking out if you have a minute or two.

Drug abusers target cheese

ST. JOHN'S — Police in St. John's say drug abusers trying to pay for their habits has led to a thriving black market for cheese.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says stealing and reselling food from supermarkets and other stores to support addictions is becoming quite common.

Earlier this week, they say a man threatened to stab people with a hypodermic needle in the parking lot of a supermarket.

From Sept. 29, 2004: Needle incident terrifying: taxi driver
Staff Sgt. June Layden says he was holding a number of blocks of cheese when police arrested him

"Right now we believe it was between 12 and 16 blocks, quite a quantity of cheese," she says.

Patrick Corrigan, 26, is charged with theft and assault in connection with the incident.

Layden says cheese theft is a growing problem in this province — and that the people stealing it need quick money to buy drugs like OxyContin.

"From speaking with a number of people yesterday including some employees at some of our larger supermarkets ... they are finding people are coming in and stealing it by blocks," she says.

"And it's believed that they are selling it to restaurants, pizza shops and things like that."

Thieves have also targeted pizza shops, and Layden believes crates of cheese are then sold back to other restaurants at a cut rate.

Robert Kourrie, the owner of Big Bite Pizza in Churchill Square, said his shop was robbed.

"You know we had a break-in here, and yeah, I think we had a case or ten blocks, something like that. [It would be worth] a little over $200," he says.

The police believe it was a drug-related crime, but no suspects have been arrested.

I had to google OxyContin. :/
Here I thought I knew everything about drugs and addiction and blablabla.
I'll stick with the cheese, more fatty but more delicious.
When I used to live in the West End I would see people at the Safeways trying to sell their food vouchers that social assistance had given them because they weren't to be trusted with money or some shit.
Quite a few of them would say things like, "Just get me a bottle from the liquor store in lieu of cash and this voucher is yours."
I suppose this is just a natural progression of the events I was noticing years ago.
Sad but true.

You're probably right... it just seems so strange that it's... cheese...

Although it is one of the best things to eat, I just can't picture blackmarket cheese dealers :X
