Ze house

We got our Energy bill for natural gas used. This will be the first one we've received since we've moved, where we have occupied the house the entire time (the last one accounted for part of the time where the house was empty).

The amount is 3x what it was at our old place during the same month. The new place is not 3x bigger - it is exactly 445 square feet larger, and it has not been that much colder than previous December/January's.

Tonight's purchase will be insulation, for the insufficiently (and inappropriately) insulated basement, the non-insulated garage, and the insufficiently insulated roof.

I'm certainly glad we purchased the project-free house - the house that we were considering that had multiple foreseeable projects clearly would have been too much for us!

Don't they sort of guesstimate how much fuel you'll use (based on previous usage in the building) and charge you for that? It's an effed up way of doing things, and I remember a local man had to go to the media before Hydro backed down from saying he owed a ton of money for power. In a building that had burned to the ground a year earlier.

It appears that they've put in some "new technology" and we are charged monthly, what we actually use.

In the old house, it was most definitely an estimate.

Even if it had been an estimate though, the former owners were two adults that were never home, and we are a family of four with two cats who are always home (and therefore don't turn the heat down), so I expect our use will be higher than the previous owners' use anyway :/

Did they actually come and read the gas meter? My dad was always adding the the insulation when I was a kid. That pretty pink tempting candy floss looking stuff that is deceptive and evil and itchy and horrid.

They've put in some new fangled thing on the meter that reports to them the reading on a monthly basis. So apparently we are getting charged for what we use :/

There is now some new kind of insulation that is green and less cotton-candy looking - easier to cut. Still just as evil and itchy and horrid though :P

We just got through having a person put in a new fence in the backyard.Insulation sould help the gas bill. And weather sripping where appropriate.

Re: Utilities
It made a difference - this month's bill was over $100 less.
