Please help me identify this movie!

Sometime between the years of 1979 and 1984 I saw a movie (possibly a classic?) on Saturday or Sunday morning TV, that made a rather significant impression. Over the years I have found myself wanting to watch it again as an adult, but unfortunately I don't know what the movie was. Nor can I identify any of the actors in the movie, which may or may not be well-known actors - I just was simply too young to pay attention to that kind of stuff.

What I can remember about the movie:
I remember thinking it was an older movie - I think it was black and white, although I wouldn't swear to it. If it had colour, it had to be earlier colour. I'm thinking it had to be for sure earlier than the 1970s (even if it was a more modern movie done in black and white) just due to the quality of the film. For reference, I used to watch Abbott and Costello, so it could even be circa that era.

Plot as I can recall (I was pretty young at the time):
There were two kids - a boy and a girl, who ended up living with some seriously oppressive care-givers. Not sure if they were relatives, or just people who adopted them, but something had happened to their parents and they were living with this new family (I think out in the country) and it seemed to me they were quite abusive. These kids met another pair of kids who helped them either play pranks on, or get revenge, on the couple who was abusive to them.

The end of the movie, which is the part that made the impression, ended with the two victimized children realizing that they were, in fact, dead. And the other children who had been helping them were, in fact, ghosts. And now they were free from the tyranny of their caregivers.

If any of this sounds even remotely familiar, please tell me what movie you think it is.

Also, if you know of another place I could ask (some community or forum) where someone might know the answer, please link/mention it in the comments.

I just wish I could remember - this is driving me nuts!

It does ring a bell but I couldn't tell you what it's called.

Random suggestion is to type in key phrases of the finale into Google. Not because I think this will throw up the film, but because it might get you a forum full of people who know those weird bits of trivia that could identify it. That's how I found the forum that instantly named the German song my mother used to sing to me when I didn't know any of the words.

This is what I need - a forum full of people who are movie buffs! Unfortunately I do not remember any of the phrases. The closest thing would be something like when the ghost children tell the main characters they are dead, I think it might have been something like, "... (that?) you are, blank blank (blank?), dead."

Not really enough to go on for a phrase :/

No, no, no, just the phrases that you've used above to describe it! It's amazing what you can get from a random google like that.

Not so much luck with that, but I did find an interesting article that might help me in my search:

Very useful. You could also go onto the IMDb forums for specific films (try the one that someone else suggested to you as being similar) and ask there if anyone knows what you're talking about. All you need is that one person to know what you mean and the IMDb crowd really know their movies.

Wish I could help! It doesn't ring a bell for me though. I think Thea's suggestion is a good one.

I found a good article which might help. I didn't realize there were plot search databases, so I might get somewhere with that.

The closest thing I'm coming up with is The Innocents. Actually, the closest thing I can think of is The Others, but that came out in 2001 and starred Nicole Kidman... I'm going to keep looking.

Yeah, I'm stumped.

Thank you for trying! I read the plot-line, and while there were similarities, I don't remember this movie being a horror. I actually remember thinking of this movie as more of a kids movie, although it pretty much stopped being a kids movie at the end. Don't remember the children being possessed though, or thinking they were.

Hmm. I might have to get it and check it out just in case.

A little googlin': How about this episode of the Twilight Zone?

Here's the whole black&white episode if you want to check for yourself.

As I started to read the summary, the beginning had me convinced that it might be the one, but the rest of the plot description makes me think it was something else.

I'm pretty sure it was a movie.

I can remember a lot of details about that day... it was summer, it was hot out. Crazy hot - hot enough that I was begging my mother to let me play in that spray toy that was a clown and the hat lifted off... Not a cloud in the sky that day.

Now if only I could remember a few more details about that movie, rather than the day!

Thanks for trying to help :)

I found a decent article that offered some suggestions. I did not realize there were move plot databases. I just need to sit down and work on search terms I guess.

Not that I can recall. (Sorry, I thought I had replied to this post - but apparently it was only in my head :/)
