Keyboard help needed

So yay, I got a new laptop!

So boo, I can't figure out the extra keyboard keys.

You know how on a standard keyboard, you hit SHIFT and the /? key to get the ?

Well on my laptop keyboard there's also an additional option, and that's E with an accent. It's in red. There are a number of other keys that also have this third option to them. Except that I can't for the life of me find the key that turns that third part on and off, and somehow, it got turned on.

So while I can easily reboot the computer to get it back to normal keyboard function, there are definitely times when I want that little e with the accent on it.

Can anyone tell me which key I want to turn it on and off, or help me figure out how I can find the answer?

Do you have an Alt Gr key? That's how all the different characters on keys are dealt with here.

Also, somewhere on the keyboard, there may be a key with FN on it in red?

It could also be switching to a different language layout. That's usually found via the keyboard icon in the lower right corner, or in the control panel, in Region and Language Settings.

There is some keyboard shortcut that turns different installed language keyboards on, and I manage to click it accidentally myself from time to time and confuse myself to death why nothing works. However, I have no idea what this shortcut may be :)

I`m betting this is what I`ve done. I really would like to figure out how to turn it on and off though.

I have a red Alt key, but I haven`t figured out any combination that will make it work.

ééé ack!

Alt Shift seems to do it on mine (you set me off to find out why this happens on my machine!)

Ok, I'm an idiot. I found the language icon you were talking about... I had somehow changed it to Canadian French.

Yay, and thank you!!!

I thought it must be on Canadian French, since even the supremely evil French French keyboard doesn't have those characters on the same key.

If it's any consolation, in the extended Swiss keyboard I have one key that does all the following:
another does:

And I have cyrillic stickers over the keys because I can't touch type in Russian, and I've written greek characters on the front in glitter sharpie. It keeps pesky yanks away from my keyboard!

LoL Ok I think you need to take a picture of this keyboard!

Yay new laptop!! I'm assuming you didn't actually get it in Boston as planned?

I have absolutely no clue what is up with your keyboard, of course. Is there only one key that does that?

We didn`t get it in Boston - Jason looked it up online and found it was going to be cheaper here... then we got here and he realized he forgot about the environmental tax on those things! It was really only about $40 different though.

What is the make and model of your new laptop? That would be the fastest way for me to look it up on google.

See I found that key, but pressing it does not appear to turn things on or off.

ETA: Ok, found the language setting - fixed!
