Poor Kitty - Part deux

The vet called this morning to say that the urine sample Buzzer provided yesterday was extremely dilute (rare for cats), and in addition, they were unable to find any evidence of cells (indicating infection). This means that either she doesn't have a UTI, or she does, and her piss was just too diluted to be able to tell. Either way, no point in doing a $70 culture on a sterile sample.

In talking to the vet, I made a few decisions.
1) It's a pain in the ass to have to leave work and stress the cat out by doing so many car rides. Let's try to minimize vet visits by taking multiple samples of things we might need, but don't send them in until we need them.
2) I don't care how much money it costs... find out what's wrong with my cat.

Having said that, I sent Jason over to the vet with Buzzer so she could have the following done:
a) Get x-rays to eliminate tumour growth, or some kind of obstruction in/around her bladder/kidneys
b) Get another urine sample and check the specific gravity to see if it's more concentrated. Then send it away for culture (if there's cells).
c) Get a blood sample so that in the event that all of the above are negative, they can do blood tests to check other problems (kidney problems are suspect at this point).

Current estimate for all tests done so far (including the above) is $350. This doesn't include any treatment assuming that eventually we find the problem and it's treatable.

The timing of all this sucks donkey balls.

25 days until maternity leave starts, and I'm on half income.

If you haven't already placed your bet on the new baby, go now!

Aw man! Good luck to Buzzer and to you! I hope whatever-it-is can be found and cured quickly.

Poor Buzzer.

Er, forgive the personal nature of this question (I've never owned a cat!) but how the hell do you get a urine sample from a cat?

My nose just got itchy writing this post. I'm so allergic to cats :P

Heh, I think the same way it's obtained from an unconscious human: Cathetar that goes up the urethre to the bladder... except with a syringe on the end so they can draw out the amount they need.

Just a guess though since I've never actually done the procedure myself :P
