It really depends on the relationship. In the past I would have said more than one a week was excessive. But then I met my wife, and we certainly say it more often than once a day. It's excessive, but we mean it, so who cares!

I think I agree, it seems to be different with different people... but now I'm wondering if the level of seriousness of the relationship has something to do with it. I kinda just figured once it was said, then it was the same for all relationships, but seeing the results coming in, I'm wondering if I need to revise that opinion.

WARNING: stereotypes!

I think women hold off saying it until they mean it - and thus are generally more likely to keep say it once it's "out there".

Men on the other hand say it just because they think it's about the right time, to get laid, or to get the GF to just shut the hell up, etc. So repeating is only necessary if one of the above rears it's head again.

Pretty cynical, but frighteningly true. I only realize how often I did for one of the above until I met my wife, which is the only person I to which can truly say I have always meant it (and I had a fiance prior to her!).

Ahh, I feel good and pessimistic now - my work here is done.

But doesn't that contradict what you said?

Men only say it to get laid/get the girlfriend to shut up, but you say it to your wife and mean it?

Or is that you mean it when you say it to her, but you still only say it to get laid/shut her up? :P

No, no, no. I mean before I met her, I didn't say because I meant it, and had alterior motives. Now that I'm married, I can say it and mean it without any issue.

Besides, now I can just "hey, ya know what, let's fuck", and it's OK (well, not really, not if I put it like that - I'd get my ass kicked for that).

Ahhh ok, I gotcha.

But that still makes for an interesting issue, is it different for those in a permanent-ish sort of relationship?

This could have the makings of poll "I Love You" Part2

There is love and love

I don't say I love somebody unless I feel pretty close to them. If I get to the point that I am that close I express it .. often. though not always with an 'I love you' but often that way.

I care about lots of people I LOVE few. but I am and odd kitty

I replied once a day although I say it several times a day because sometimes I just say it without paying attention but I believe that the "I love you" only really comes out about once a day. (Really needs to be more because she really puts up with a lot of my BS)
