Nature attack

This weekend at the lake has been one of the best ones as far as natural beauty and animal sightings. In addition to the amazing fall colours, we also were privileged enough to have our own lovely red squirrel and a family of whiskey jacks come to take away our peanuts, an absolutely adorable skunk who looked as wide as a badger with his winter fur, a golden eagle, and finally a bear.

We had just put the kids to bed, and I heard this thump on the deck. Thinking perhaps a branch had fallen, I went to the window and opened the blinds and found an adult black bear staring right back at me! After the initial freak-out and stressing that the door really wasn't all that solid if he decided he wanted to come in, we got a bit excited about it... after-all, it isn't everyday we get to see a wild bear.

It really didn't occur to me that bears would also eat the nuts we put out for the squirrel. In 30+ years of coming up to the lake, we have always put nuts out for the squirrel, and we have never had any bears. Well I guess this was just a little too late in the fall, there were too few people around, and the nuts looked really good! As we watched the bear, we saw the neighbour's skunk trot over - we've noticed him come by on occasion - he'll pick up any nuts the squirrel may have dropped. He came into the yard, took one look at the bear, and high-tailed it out of there. He came back five minutes later and did the same thing - clearly he wasn't going to get into a pissing match with the bear. Apparently if you want to keep skunks out of your yard, you just need to have a bear. We named him Charlie.

The bear was non-aggressive, and just doing what bears do. While I'd rather not have him come back, it was kinda cool.

Now if only I'd been a little less afraid, then I would have tried to take some pictures!

Ha! That's awesome. I wouldn't have started to think about how cool it was until a few days later when the beer was hopefully long gone!

Hehe, it took me until the bear started to shamble away before I stared kicking myself that I didn't clickety-click when he was in good light!

Blimey! I'd have been terrified! So glad we don't have any scary wild animals here.

Initially it was a bit off-putting, but the bear was really laid back. Helped put me at ease. Although it's a bit alarming that I had a laid back bear on my deck, who wasn't concerned about the lights, or the noise, or anything.
