Just Musing Aloud

I think it's a shame that what's-his-name who was sentenced to death, did his best to turn his life around and become a positive role-model for society, and society went and killed him anyways.

If you're talking about who I think you're talking about he killed 4 people and was linked to 40 other murders. If you take a life, what gives you the right to keep your own?

I didn't say I didn't understand why he was sentenced to death, only that it was a shame that by the time they got around to killing him, he'd become more of a contribution to society.

Seems like a waste to kill someone who's finally doing some good... ya know?

Even though he did some good in later years, at no time did he ever express any remorse for his actions. To me, that's the real telling issue. And I think it would be for the families as well.

Of course, I'm one of those that agrees with his destiny, so there you have it.

I know what you mean - he was on a long sentance in death row so he had a chance to turn it around, had he been in Texas he would have been there a year.

Personally, I think putting someone in prison permanently is much more of a death sentance than killing them.

i kind of sit on the fence with these issues. do you think he would have done something good with his life if he wasnt sitting on death row? was he trying to turn his life around because he "wanted" to do some good, or he wanted you to "think" he had changed?

i do believe in an eye for an eye but i also believe in redemption. this one is a tough case.

Because we are supposed to be a civilized people and tell me how "killing people who kill people teaches people not to kill"?

It doesn't, but I don't believe in not doing anything either.
It's hard to assess simply because the amount of pain he's caused... I dunno, it's weird, because over here 20 years and that's it.

In my mind, it's all about consequences. The worse the crime, the more harsh the consequence (at least in theory anyway). I think it's just too bad that society doesn't have the abilities to impose extremely strict and meaningful consequences on those individuals without resorting to terminating their lives. At some point, there's no amount of consequence that will make a difference and encourage people to change... they have to want to do it. So I'm not sure what to do with those people at all. Continue to allow them to burden society, or what?

I do agree though, it doesn't tell anyone that killing people who kill people teaches people not to kill.

Well the executioner gets a get out of jail free card on this point, hey?

i don't believe that people have the right to decide that someone deserves to die. that makes the jury that votes to kill him murderers too.

Thus continues the argument though, because he had no right to decide someone had to die, therefore how do you deal with him?

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure how it works in the U.S. Up here, it's the judge that decides the punishment... the jury just decides if he's guilty.
